APA Website Citation Generator
The APA Website Citation Generator formats a webpage into an APA 7th edition reference and matching in-text citation — author or group, date, italicized page title, site name, and URL.
Paste the page address or enter the fields manually, decide whether a retrieval date belongs on a changing page, then copy the parenthetical or narrative citation with the reference entry.
Website citations fail most often when writers invent journal volume fields or omit the organization author that actually owns the page; this form shows only webpage fields.
If the “website” is really a PDF of a journal article, cite it as a journal (ideally from DOI) instead of forcing a webpage template onto a paginated article.

What is an APA website citation?
An APA website citation is an author-date reference that points to a specific webpage rather than a journal volume, book, or video.
A typical APA 7 webpage reference lists the individual or group author, the publication date (or n.d.), the page title in italics, the site name when it differs from the author, and the URL. In text, cite the author and year the same way as for other sources.
Group authors are common on government and organization pages. When the author name matches the site name, APA 7 omits a redundant site-name element and moves from title to URL.
Retrieval dates appear only when page content is designed to change over time. Stable articles and reports usually need the URL alone without “Retrieved from.”
How the APA website citation generator works
Three steps turn a live page into APA 7 in-text and reference output.
- 1
Paste the URL or start from fields.
Drop the page address to seed title and site metadata when available, or type author, date, title, site, and URL directly when the parser cannot read the page.
- 2
Confirm author and date decisions.
Place a named person or organization in the author slot. Use (n.d.) when no date appears. Toggle a retrieval date only for content that changes continuously.
- 3
Copy the webpage citation pair.
Review italic title formatting and URL completeness, then copy the in-text form and reference into the paper.
Step 1
Paste the URL or start from fields.
How to cite a website in APA
Cite a webpage in APA 7 with author, date, italicized title, site name when needed, and URL — then match that author-date in text.
Author, A. A. or Group Name. (Year, Month Day). Title of page. Site Name. https://www.example.com/page
Example with a personal author: Ruiz, M. (2024, January 12). How to sleep before exams. Student Wellness Hub. https://www.example.edu/sleep. Parenthetical form: (Ruiz, 2024).
Example with a group author that matches the site: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (2023, March 3). Handwashing tips. https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing. Because author and site match, the site name does not repeat.
Cite a whole website in text only when the site itself is the source and no specific page is quoted; APA generally prefers citing the exact page used. When quoting, add a paragraph number or section heading if page numbers do not exist.
Edge cases
- No author: move the title to the author position and use a shortened title in the in-text citation.
- No date: use (n.d.) in the reference and in every in-text citation.
- Changing content (e.g., continually updated dashboards): add Retrieved Month Day, Year, from URL.
- PDF linked from a webpage: cite by the document’s real type (report, article) when possible, not as a generic website.

Surname, initials. Ampersand before the final author.

Literature reviews often mix journal articles with association guidelines hosted as HTML pages.
Why use an APA website citation generator?
Four website-specific failure modes show up in graded APA lists.
Organization authors get left blank
Students delete the author field when no person is named. The generator forces the group-author decision early.
Retrieval dates appear on stable pages
APA 7 rarely needs retrieval dates. A dedicated toggle stops writers from pasting “Retrieved from” on every URL.
Journal templates teach wrong blanks
Reusing a journal form invents volume fields for websites. This page hides those inputs.
Titles need italics on webpages
APA 7 italicizes webpage titles. The preview shows that italics so paste destinations can be matched.

APA website citation FAQ
Move the page title into the author position in the reference, keep the date, site name if needed, and URL, then shorten the title for the in-text citation. Example reference start: How to register for labs. (2024, May 2)…. Parenthetical form uses quotation marks around a shortened title: (“How to register,” 2024). Prefer a group author when an organization clearly owns the page.
